It all started in Alpena, Michigan

In May of 2021, we took a mini vacation and drove to Alpena for a long weekend over Memorial Day.

The very first thing we noticed was the water. It was clear, and blue and insanely clean. It was fairly cold outside, but the air was clean and I don’t think I could have enjoyed the view more!

Downtown Alpena, a picture taken while walking along the water…. Gorgeous view of Thunder Bay leading out to Lake Huron!

We were excited to explore the area and learn more about the downtown area. I’m very interested in art, being near the water and having a place where you can safely walk from your home to a great little cafe to get your favorite cup of coffee.

Unfortunately, we picked a weekend that wasn’t ideal. Most businesses were closed on the holiday, but there were a few that were open and we enjoyed browsing them.

In fact, one of the shops that was open was a gallery that highlighted several local artists, and we spoke with Jay Johnson (find his work on Esty under JaysWoodburningArt) who was manning the store that day. His artwork consisted of burning a drawing into wood, and painting for some added intensity. We admired his work we enjoyed talking with him. In fact, I do mean to reach out to him to commission a gift for my husband at some point!

After driving around the area, we determined that all the homes directly south of the downtown area were lovely. Every home was well kept and was within walking distance of the water. And, I think it might have been a bit of a hike, but you could have walked to the downtown area for that cup of coffee (or latte, like we enjoyed at Cabin Creek Coffee downtown!).

Other things that really struck us on the outskirts of town were how well the roads were maintained. Being a Michigan native and how full of potholes the roads tend to be in the Spring, it was a welcome surprise and delight to explore the area without worry of blowing a tire.

My husband is a bird hunter, and he noted that there are a lot of Cedar trees that are very densely packed in the forests. It’s beautiful to look at, but likely wouldn’t be good nesting grounds for grouse or woodcock.

There are several outdoor activities and side trips that you can make to make your family want to come and visit. Presque Isle, with a lighthouse, is to the north. Hubbard Lake is to the south. And many additional parks.

And last, Alpena is large enough that you don’t feel like you are missing out. There were larger grocery stores and additional shopping where you can get everything you need.

Don’t hesitate to take a trip over to Alpena and explore it for yourself. It is lovely!
